Industrialization, Social Capital, and Aging in Indonesia 1985-1997 Principal Investigator: Edward Miguel The question of how industrialization transforms existing social institutions is a central and long-standing theme in development economics. This project examined how rapid industrial development affected the nature of social interactions and "social capital" in Indonesia - including membership in local community organizations that serve an insurance function in rural Indonesia - and how these changes in turn impacted important demographic and health outcomes. Paper submitted to the Journal of Political Economy. |
